3.3.1: Regional Railways North West

The company continued operating as Regional Railways until the first franchise began on 2 March 1997 when First Group started operating as North Western Trains but changing its trading name to First North Western (FNW) in November 1998. It took some time to create a corporate livery hence in the meantime it simply branded existing trainsets with ‘First North West’ until the new livery was revealed. This first franchise lasted until 2004 when the second franchise was awarded to Serco-NedRailways which began operations as Northern Rail from 12 December 2004. The third franchise was awarded to Arriva Trains which retained the Northern trading name, albeit re-styled, and began operations from April 2016. A new livery was revealed in December 2016 but, as at March 2017, it has not been applied to the ‘Pacer’ fleet on the grounds that the franchise commitment includes the condition that the fleet must be replaced by 2019.
